Is Nodusfall a Gacha Game? No — Characters Unlock Through Play
✦ Last updated August 29, 2026
No. Nodusfall is not a gacha game. This is confirmed directly by HoYoverse's development team in two separate interviews at Gamescom 2026 (Famitsu FAQ and 4Gamer's campfire Q&A).
The official statements
Famitsu FAQ (translated):
"Unlike previous miHoYo titles, characters are not obtained through random draws — they are unlocked by playing. Cosmetic items are being considered as an 'important monetization element', with details to be announced later."
4Gamer Q&A:
"Characters are not obtained via gacha; they are unlocked through continued play. For monetization, we are exploring appearance-changing items as an important focus."
English media quickly picked up the headline — PC Gamer: "Nodusfall is free to play but isn't a typical gacha game."
How monetization works instead
| Element | Status |
|---|---|
| Base game | Free to play |
| Characters | Unlocked through gameplay (no pulls) |
| Cosmetics / skins | Main paid focus — pricing TBA |
| Battle pass / subscription | Not announced — do not assume |
| Loot boxes | None announced |
The team explicitly frames paid content around changing your character's appearance — outfits, hair, accessories — with mounts also customizable.
Why this matters for players
- No "pay to unlock characters" wall: the roster comes from progression.
- No pity system, no soft-pity math, no rate-up banners to track.
- Western players burned by gacha (a hot topic in the announcement thread) get a Monster Hunter-style co-op game with cosmetic-only spending.
What we don't know yet
Skin pricing, whether a battle pass exists, and how long character unlocks take are all unannounced. This page will be updated the day details drop — check back after the next official showcase (TGA 2026 is the next likely window).
